The focus of our Lent this year is Where Jesus Walked based on the photography of Ken Duncan from a book by the same name.
We start each morning listening to an Easter or praise hymn. The kids and I take turns choosing. So far, we've been learning "The Old Rugged Cross", "What Can Wash Away My Sin?" and today Madelyn choose "At the Cross". We're using Passion Hymns for a Kid's Heart by Bobbie Wolgemuth and Joni Eareckson Tada. I don't particularly care for the children singing on the CD, but both kids like it.
During breakfast, I read a short chapter from Journey to the Cross by Helen Haidle. It's out of print, but well worth buying. As we read through the Easter story, each chapter has two short sections of history from the time period. (Today, we learned palm branches were a symbol of freedom and were engraved on the last coins made by the Israelites.)
Then, we jump on our magic carpet and head to the Holy Land with A Child's Geography by Ann Voskamp. We've learned about all Turkey where one of the rivers from the Garden of Eden flows. The kids made hand drawn maps of Turkey today.
Thus begins our walk with Jesus to the cross and beyond.
